Winter the Dolphin

Look at this pretty. She's Winter :)

A LITTLE STORY ABOUT WINTER:

Winter (estimated to be about 3 months when she was rescued) found herself entangled in the ropes of a crab trap on Dec 10. 2005, in Mosquito Lagoon off the coast of Florida. The rope cut off the supply of blood to her tail. She was brought to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium to begin a long rehabilitation. Unfortunately, she lost her tail as well as two vertebrae as a result of the serious injuries that she had sustained.

Pity Winter...she's strong..

At first, Winter learnt to swim "side to side" body motion instead of the normal "up and down" motion. The veterinarians feared that this unusual movement would damage her spine. Kevin Carroll, who had designed prosthetics for other animals (dogs, ostrich, duck) volunteered to help.

Kevin Carrol has fitted Winter a prosthetic tail and continues to perfect the design as the mammal grows.

Now, Winter has done amazingly well in the short time since her stranding. She has completely healed and adapted a new swim pattern with her prosthetic flipper :)

Interesting..

Winter, a living miracle. You're tough :)

Drop Bear??

Cute koala bear

What?

I accidentally come to this image when I google search something. I was shocked. Eww...bad animal. At first, I thought it is a koala bear. I didnt know that koala can be this fierce. Shudder.. Then, I learnt of "dropbears". I was feeling curious about this creature, so I did a little findings about this creature.

According to wikipedia, a drop bear is a FICTITIOUS Australian marsupial, which means, it is not real. However, from other sources that I read up, it's not just like that. Drop bear can be likened to fairy, dragon, Philadephia sea monster, alien..urm..basically, no one can prove whether they really exist or not.

Their mode of attack is as simple as it is deadly. When a suitable prey is directly under the branch they have been waiting on, they will literally drop on the animal, from a height of up to eight metres, and set about ripping its head off. They will then take the carcase, or bits of it, back up in to the tree, where they will hold on to it for several days until the meat has rotted a bit, before eating it (that was gross)...

Hmm....I don't like this drop bear. I read this from somewhere: "If you asked whether drop bear is real, that's like asking if GOD is real". So, it depends on you whether you want to believe if it really exist or not. Personally, I still think I should take precaution when I visit Australian bush somedays :D, cause I'm a coward~

Tips to avoid the threat of drop bear:
1) Avoid drop bear prone areas
2) Try to avoid speaking languages apart from English
3) Use the Aussie Lingo (Australian slang)
4) Smear vegemite on your armpits (I lol-ed at this)
5) Hop on one leg (LOL again)
6) Keep moving
7) Wear a broad brimmed head
8) Sing a song
9) Don't declare liberal political views out (huh?)
10) Don't act scared

The tips are taken from here. That's all I wanted to say about this deadly creature.

Follow my heart

Following my heart, I went to National Planetarium. Yesterday night, there was a really bright star. But, I was informed that it is Jupiter, the largest planet of the solar system. I was fascinated with the telescope and my 1st time experience of viewing the Jupiter with it's 3 moon with the telescope. Of course, I'd the chance to view the total lunar eclipse of 2011.
The telescope stood there magnificiently.

Apart from that, I'd the chance to enter the National Planetarium completely free of charge. I gained a lot of knowledge there. It was a wonderful experience for me.
Playing with the model of a telescope

I received free gifts of a 3D glasses and Eclipse mints. I bought a T-shirt and a bookmark as souvenirs from there :)

One week MC is over~

At last, I resume my daily lives as a medical student.

I felt I missed a lot of things due to this 1 week of chicken pox. I cannot go to the hospital, I cannot go and clerk patients, and most importantly, I missed my chance as a trauma team member.

Topics that I missed due to chicken pox:
1) Musculoskeletal tumors
2) Back pain
3) Wound management
4) Limping child

HOWEVER, I felt happy because I can be with my family for a few days. Mom, dad, bro, and me. All together. My family all come to KL. We went to Sungai Wang, Pavillion, and Midvalley. I enjoyed the time together with my family ^_^

Now, it's time to get serious to study...holiday mood over~

Btw, I saw two cute husky puppies in the Pet Wonderland, Midvalley. My favourite dog
