Walking...

Departure place: hostel
Destination: faculty
Distance: 30 minutes walk
Frequency: 3/week
Reason: LONG queue (especially from 7am-8am)
Advantage: My stamina is improving.
Disadvantage: I'll sweat all over when I reach faculty.
Feeling: Start to like walking to faculty.

^_^ Having fun today~

Today after the exam, i went out to have a crazy day at Sunway with Felicia....haha...wanna ice skating..
First time experience there..
The ice-skating boots are damn heavy, and I felt really comfortable to wear them..
First step on the ice field...really scary, really unstable~~~>_<
After that, we went to window-shopping..hehe...until really late..
On the way back to hostel, we stopped at a mamak shop at KL central monorail and enjoy a plate of mee goreng there...really enjoy ^_^
Then, we were really lucky to board the last monorail (11.30pm) back to Titiwangsa (where our hostel is)..
Coincidently, we met three friends on monorail (they boarded from Times Square)..We went back together..(reached hostel at 12.10am)

Rain and Drain

Rain=polydipsia
Drain=polyuria

These are symptoms of Diabetes Mellitus (DM)

So creative right...

Last few weeks, I visit a 53 years old Malay female and learnt about her health problems..She had DM, hyperlipidemia, and asthma. Apparently, her chief complaint for now is poor wound healing after the resection of lipoma. Why poor wound healing? It is because of DM...Then, I also found out there are proteins in her urine, which is a sign of kidney failure. Why? Again, it is a complication of DM...Oh my GOD, I'm a bit worry about her. Furthermore, she refused to take insulin injection because she was afraid of the injection.

So, after doing some readings, I feel like wanna share a bit on how to prevent DM..

1. See a doctor to screen for DM (those who are high-risk of getting one).

2. Exercise. It lowers the blood sugar.

3. Enjoy a healthy diet. Minimizing sugary and fatty foods should be a goal. Fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains, nuts, fish, lean meats, and low-fat dairy products are all excellent choices.

4. Lose weight!!

5. Eat nuts.

6. Choose whole grains. There is slower rise of sugar.

7. Increase intake of magnesium.

8. Don't smoke!!!

9. Preventative medications . Eg: Metformin, acarbose, and ACE inhibitors. However, these medications have also been shown to be less effective than diet and exercise.

10. Herbal medicines can be good.

Take good care of health o~

Fecal Smear...eww

Today's lab practical was quite interesting...lol

We were playing with one type of human waste products, stools!

I was thinking of letting others to do the demo, then I can just stood beside and watched them do the lab test...Unfortunately, everyone had to perform that lab test...sigh...

I wore the gloves tightly. I didn't want the stool to had any chance to "land" on my hand..lol

This test is simple though....smear the stool on the microscope slide which had some specific solution on it (saline, iodine, or ethanol)..Wondering how to smear the stool? Lol...use a stick (similar size with a match), mix the stool thoroughly with the end of the stick, and then just transfer the stool that is adhered at the end of the stick to the slide...

Simple, right?

I felt satisfied and proud of myself when I found an egg of the roundworm (Ascaris Lumbricoides) on the slide. =)

At the end of the lab practical, I go for aseptic hand-washing...I dont want to get infected by the parasites...

Recall back.....

Wanna refresh my memory on what I had learnt this afternoon.

PHYSICAL EXAMINATION ON GIT

1) For the general appearance, observe whether the patient is cachexic, obese, alert, concious, jaundice, pallor, or is he generally well and healthy.

2) Then examine the hands of the patient. See whether there are any clubbings, koilonychia, leuconychia, cyanosis, palmar erythema, Dupytren's contracture, pigmentation, and hepatic flap..

3) Next, see the face of the patient. For the eyes, look for any jaundice, Kayser-Fleischer rings, xanthelasma, periorbital purpura and anemia...Then, look for angular stomatitis, ulceration, glossitis, and pigmentation, leukoplakia, hypertrophy of gums, monilia..etc

4) Find any enlargement of supraclavicular nodes..(around the neck area)

5) Inspect the chest..Sought for spider naevi, acanthosis nigricans, gynaecomastia, bruises, petechiae, and scratch marks.

6) For the abdomen area, see whether there is any visible pulsation, pigmentation (again), distention, dilated veins, local swelling, visible peristalsis, skin lesions, striae, masses or any surgical scar.

7) Now come to palpation (yeah, can touch the patient haha).
Palpate the nine region areas of the abdomen..First palpate lightly, after that palpate deeply for any tenderness. Palpate for the liver, spleen, kidney and abdominal aorta.

8) Next is percussion. Percuss the liver, spleen and for any ascites..While patient is rolled on one side, spleen can be percussed again for any enlargement.

9) For auscultation, hear the bowel sounds. Is it sluggish? Is it tinkling? Or is there any loud gurgling sounds? Auscultate for the renal bruit, abdominal aorta bruit, and liver bruit.

10) Lastly, palpate for pedal oedema..

I know...I must had missed something..Nevermindlah..this is the first time..

A
CHRISTMAS RECIPE

Take a bit of cheerfulness,
A pinch of laughter, too,

Next take a cup of thoughtfullness,
And stir them through and through
.

Add to this tranquility,
A verse of "Silent Night,"
That ever quiet we may be
When God sends His holy light.

Gently fold in some tenderness,
A handclasp or smile will do.
Perhaps it could be a fond caress,
Or a rose with a drop of dew.

Set aside a moment while you go
For spices, herbs, a scent of pine...
For music and fun, a candle's glow,

Now mix and stir and fold again,
Then add some mistletoe,
A bit of faith, and love, and then
Into the oven your cake must go.

Where warmth and affection will combine
To make this cake come true.
Garnish with happiness, truth so fine,
Enough for you, and you!

Cut a piece, but save some too
For every day of the year.
Serve with a prayer for peace on earth,
And a heavenly kingdom near.
